EcoDigital and ZatoNovo to establish a Digital Infrastructure for Smart Agriculture in Tanzania

Agriculture plays a pivotal role in the economy of Tanzania, serving as a significant contributor to the country's GDP, exports, and employment. It is a primary source of livelihood for the majority of the population and is central to the nation's efforts towards economic growth and poverty reduction. It is no surprise that the economic landscape of Tanzania is undergoing a transformation, with a focus on enhancing agricultural productivity and structural changes in employment. The integration of digital infrastructure in smart agriculture emerges as a pivotal factor in this context, potentially influencing the country's economic growth and the efficiency of its agricultural sector.

It is in this context that eCoDigital and ZatoNovo have launched a project to establish a  digital infrastructure that can transform traditional farming practices through  smart agricultural solutions tailored for the Tanzanian agricultural landscape. This innovative solution involves the deployment of sensor-powered smart devices across farms. These devices are designed to collect and relay critical data, including accurate weather forecasts, directly to farmers.

In addition to providing vital weather data for digital infrastructure, this product introduces another feature: AI-assisted disease diagnosis for plants. This technology enables farmers to identify and manage crop diseases early, drastically reducing potential crop loss. Through our system, images of affected crops can be uploaded via smart devices, and AI algorithms analyze these images to diagnose diseases and suggest immediate, actionable solutions. This infrastructure enables various smart services, including digital extension services for farmers in rural areas. "This will enable extension officers to provide expert, data-backed advice to farmers," said Mr. Brian Rowe, CEO of ZatoNovo, a partner in the initiative.

"Integrating AI into our services bridges the critical gap between traditional farming practices and modern agricultural science," says Dr. Moses Ismail, CEO of eCoDigital. "This empowers our farmers with knowledge and tools that were once accessible only through specialized research institutions."

Dr. Moses added that despite agriculture's central role in Tanzania's economy, farmers face numerous challenges, primarily due to reliance on traditional methods and the unpredictability of weather conditions. "These challenges not only affect productivity but also threaten the livelihoods of the vast majority of people who depend on agriculture for their income," he added.

The introduction of digital infrastructure in agriculture promises a significant shift towards data-driven farming practices. "This technology is not just a tool; it's a transformation. It's about empowering our farmers with information and services that were previously out of reach," explains Dr. Moses.

Further emphasizing the technology’s significance, Mr. Brian Rowe, CEO of ZatoNovo, added, "Integrating digital solutions into agriculture opens up a world of possibilities, from improved productivity to sustainability."

Farmers, the primary beneficiaries of this project, have expressed overwhelming support. "This solution looks like it will be  a game-changer for my farming operations. Having reliable weather data and expert advice at my fingertips ensures that my farm is more resilient than ever," shares a participating farmer.

This project  aligns with global initiatives and aims to leverage technology to solve agricultural challenges. This initiative contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), showcasing how innovation can drive progress toward a more sustainable and secure food future.
